In one line
Crimson Haze is a real-time strategy game set in the Vietnam War. Lead American squads through a year in the Central Highlands, or play the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese in skirmish and online.
About the game
Crimson Haze is a real-time strategy game about the war on the ground in Vietnam. There is no base to build and no army to mass. You lead a handful of squads through jungle, paddy and hill country, where you only see what your men can see and the enemy is usually closer than you think.
The campaign follows Danny Mercer, a fictional rifleman with the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, through his year in Vietnam: the new base camp at An Khê in September 1965, the landing at LZ X-Ray in the Ia Drang valley that November, and the operations on the Bồng Sơn plain in 1966. Between missions Danny writes home, and an older Danny looks back on what happened. The places, operations and units are real; the men in Danny’s squad are not.
In skirmish either side can be played. The Americans have helicopters, artillery and air strikes. The Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese have more men, the tunnels and the jungle. Up to four players a side can play against the computer or with friends online over Steam.
The wounded have to be carried out and lifted by medevac, or they die where they fell. The men who are lost go on a memorial wall, by name. Crimson Haze is made by Studio Bastion, a small independent studio in Hampshire, UK.
Features
Squads, not armies
You command a company: rifle squads, machine guns, mortars and radio men. Every man in a squad has a name.
The jungle hides everything
You only see what your men can see. A squad lying still in the trees is invisible until it opens fire, and the first burst of an ambush hits twice as hard.
Support from the sky
Helicopters, artillery, air strikes and napalm, called in by radio. It takes time to arrive and it does not care whose men are underneath.
The wounded are carried
A man who goes down is not dead yet. Get him to a landing zone and call a medevac, or he bleeds out where he fell.
Both sides are playable
The Americans have the firepower. The Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese have the numbers, the tunnels and the ground.
Nobody is forgotten
The men you lose in the campaign go on a memorial wall, by name, and stay there.
Field manual
The player’s manual: controls, every unit and call for support, and the game modes, with the numbers the game uses.
Download (PDF, 25 MB)History and approach
The campaign uses real units, operations and places, and fictional people. No character stands in for a real soldier.
Civilians, the wounded and men who surrender are not targets, and there is no score for kills. Weapons and vehicles have generic names.
The studio
Studio Bastion is a small independent studio in Hampshire, UK. Bastion Games is its games label, making games for phones, tablets and computers.
Dedicated to all who lost their lives in the wars fought in Vietnam.
May their stories never be forgotten.
